Field Funds moves small amounts of funding directly to socially engaged artists, quickly and without unnecessary barriers. This spring, we are inviting our community to help support Field Funds for a third year.
In its first two years, the program supported 115 artists and collectives and distributed $57,500 in small grants. Artists in 29 states and Washington, D.C. received support, and more than 2,600 artists applied.
The program focuses on the parts of artistic practice that are often unfunded but essential. Artists use these grants to bring people together, make events accessible, translate materials, document work, and support the time it takes to build relationships. These are small interventions that make a difference.
Field Funds operates through both open calls and partner cycles.
Open calls are available to socially engaged artists anywhere in the country. These cycles support the long-term foundation of collaborative work: gatherings, accessibility, documentation, and shared process.
Partner cycles work differently. We collaborate with artist-led organizations that are deeply rooted in their communities. These partnerships allow Field Funds to reach artists we might not otherwise reach and to respond when support is needed quickly. Recent cycles have supported Lakota artist-run space Racing Magpie in Rapid City, South Dakota; Detroit festival and public art commissioning organization Sidewalk Detroit; and fashion project Rebirth Garments, which creates custom-made, gender non-conforming wearables and accessories by and for disabled people of all sizes and ages. In partnership, Field Funds distributes grants in response to crises, emergencies, and other pressing needs. Field Funds has partnered with efforts like data visualization and narrative change organization Visualizing Palestine and artist collective Pansy Collective to expand their Hurricane Helene response and offer emergency relief funds to their community in Asheville, North Carolina.
Every dollar given to Grow Field Funds goes directly to artists. Each $500 supports one grant, and the infrastructure to pay out those grants within days of applications closing is already in place.
If this work resonates with you, we invite you to help us grow Field Funds so we can keep showing up for artists, season after season. Gifts at any level contribute directly to artists doing collaborative and community-rooted work across the country.
